Young artists present debut production for the whole family

On June 15, 2019 Three Sisters Young Artists presented a quirky, operatic twist on a classic fairy-tale with Hansel and Gretel: In Concert by Engelbert Humperdinck and translated by Marcie Stapp. This family-friendly opera welcomed opera lovers and new comers alike.

The Three Sisters Young Artists is a group of like-minded individuals who have come together to create opportunities for young Albertan singers to share their craft. Founded by Calgary-based singers Alyssa Durnie, Jocelyn Francescut, and Meghan Goguen, this was the company’s debut production. All cast members were Albertan musicians, hailing from Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge.

The idea for the company is something that has been in the works for a long time. On the idea to create more arts opportunities in Calgary, Meghan Goguen – founder and the Witch in this production – says, “We love our province, we love our art, and we want to build, foster, and grow a community in which musicians want to take part, to create art, and build long-lasting connections in this world greatly in need of art and love.” For other local emerging artists, the experience they are gaining is invaluable. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to be learning and performing a full role with such a great cast of musicians,” says Cristina Lanz, who is playing Hansel in the production. “The fact that the music and story are so much fun is really the icing on the cake – or the gingerbread in this case.”

Hansel and Gretel debuted at Christ Church Elbow Park on June 15, 2019 at 7 pm to an audience of 120 people. Audience members were enraptured by the fun, quirky staging, the bright and beautiful costumes, and they experienced stunning singing in a way that they had not before. One audience member went as far to say that ‘It was the most fun I’ve ever had at an opera!’ Schmopera reviewer Oliver Munar noted in a casual, in-person review ‘…Singers performed in a beautiful space. Kudos to Hansel and Gretel, and especially the mother and the witch for their tour de force performances… [The] use of the whole sanctuary was fantastic.’
